Korean Rock Fern
Polystichum tsus-simense
Korean Rock Fern
Polystichum tsus-simense, the Korean rock fern, is a refined, compact evergreen fern with beautifully intricate, finely-divided dark green fronds held in neat, shuttlecock-like rosettes. Smaller and daintier than many shield ferns, it has an almost lacy quality, with a subtle dark midrib that adds definition to each frond. It's as happy in a shady border as it is on a windowsill.
Use polystichum tsus-simense to bring texture and evergreen structure to shady borders, woodland planting, ferneries and rockeries, to soften the edge of a shaded path, or in pots, terrariums and as a cool, low-light houseplant. It combines wonderfully with hostas, heucheras, mosses and other ferns.
How and where to grow it
Like most ferns, it loves partial to full shade and a moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, sheltered from cold drying winds and harsh sun. It's hardy and evergreen in most of the UK, holding its fronds through winter, and needs very little care - simply remove any tired or damaged fronds in spring as the new growth unfurls.

It stays neat and small for a shield fern, forming dainty rosettes around 30-40cm tall and wide, so it suits smaller spaces and containers well.
