Yes, it's hardy in most of the UK and evergreen, holding its finely-cut dark green fronds through winter for year-round structure in shade.

In partial to full shade, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, sheltered from cold drying winds and strong sun. It's ideal for shady borders, ferneries, woodland and rockeries.

Yes - its compact, refined habit makes it an excellent low-light houseplant and a lovely choice for terrariums, as well as a garden fern.

It stays neat and small for a shield fern, forming dainty rosettes around 30-40cm tall and wide, so it suits smaller spaces and containers well.

Very little is needed. Keep the soil from drying out and remove any tired or damaged fronds in spring as the fresh growth unfurls.
