Description

Pittosporum tobira 'Mojo' is a compact, variegated form of the Japanese mock orange. It makes a dense, rounded mound of glossy, leathery, spoon-shaped leaves, each grey-green in the centre with a clean creamy-white margin, so the whole shrub looks bright and fresh even in the shade of a wall. In late spring small, creamy-white flowers with a sweet orange-blossom scent may appear among the foliage. It was selected for its neat, dwarf habit and for better cold tolerance than the older variegated forms.

Hardiness and seasons. Pittosporum tobira is a plant for milder and coastal gardens, and the RHS rates the species H3. 'Mojo' is reported by its raisers to be hardier than the typical variegated form, but in the UK it should still be given a warm, sheltered spot and some protection in a severe winter, especially while young. The foliage is evergreen and holds its cream and green colouring all year.

How and where to grow. Plant it in full sun or light shade, in well-drained soil, with shelter from cold, drying winds; a south or west facing wall is ideal. It tolerates chalk, loam and sandy soils across the pH range, and once settled it copes well with drought and salt spray. Growth is slow, reaching roughly 60 to 90cm tall and wide over many years, so it stays in scale with a small garden or a container.

Using it in the garden. Use it to light up the front of a sheltered border, to edge a path, or as a low, informal hedge in a coastal garden. It is excellent in a large pot on a sunny terrace, where it can be moved under cover in a hard winter, and it partners well with grasses, agapanthus and other Mediterranean-style plants.

If you're thinking "that sounds quite small for the price," here's something worth knowing: younger, smaller plants almost always adapt better to your home than larger ones. They adjust faster to your light and humidity, put out new growth more quickly, and tend to establish stronger root systems long-term. A plant that grows into your space will usually outperform one that was already big when it arrived.

That said, every plant is an individual. The one you receive may vary slightly in height, shape, or fullness compared to the photo, that's the nature of living things, not a quality issue. What should I do when my plant arrives?
First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.

Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.

It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.
