Description

Greek oregano is the one to grow if you want the strong, peppery oregano flavour of Mediterranean cooking. Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum forms a bushy clump of small, hairy, grey-green leaves that are far more aromatic than common garden marjoram, topped in summer by clusters of white flowers that bees and butterflies love. Pick it fresh for tomato sauces, grilled vegetables and lamb, or dry the stems for the pungent oregano that goes on pizza. It thrives on neglect in a sunny pot or a gravel bed.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors February to April, or outdoors April to June
  • Sow very thinly on the surface or no deeper than 5 mm; the seed needs light
  • Germination takes 7 to 15 days
  • Full sun, in light, poor, well-drained soil; no feeding needed
  • Grows to around 40 cm tall and 20 to 30 cm wide
  • Pick leaves from about two months after sowing; flowers in mid to late summer
  • A hardy perennial that returns every year

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow oregano seeds?

Start oregano indoors from February to April on a warm windowsill, or sow outside from April to June once the soil has warmed. Seed sown early gives plants big enough to pick from in their first summer.

Is Greek oregano perennial?

Yes. It dies back or slows down in winter and regrows each spring. Cut the old stems down at the end of the season and give it a sunny, well-drained spot, as cold, wet soil is a bigger risk than frost.

What is the difference between Greek oregano and ordinary oregano?

Greek oregano is a subspecies of common oregano with a much stronger, sharper flavour and white rather than pink flowers. It is the type most cooks want for Greek and Italian dishes.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
