Description

Bee balm earns its name: its shaggy, spidery flower heads are a magnet for bees and butterflies from midsummer into early autumn. 'Panorama Mix' flowers in scarlet, crimson, pink, purple and white on upright stems above aromatic, mint-scented leaves. Leaves and flowers make a citrus and mint herbal tea, once known as Oswego tea. Monarda didyma is a hardy perennial that forms a spreading clump, perfect for the middle of a sunny border or a cottage garden.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to April at 18 to 20°C, pressing the seed onto the surface and barely covering it
  • Plant out May to June, or sow in a cold frame then
  • Barely cover, about 0.2 cm deep
  • Germination takes 10 to 21 days
  • Full sun or light shade, in soil that stays moist in summer but drains in winter
  • Grows to about 75 to 90 cm tall and spreads about 45 cm
  • Flowers July to September, mostly from the second summer; an early indoor sowing may flower late in the first year
  • Hardy herbaceous perennial; divide every few years to keep it vigorous

Is monarda perennial?

Yes. Monarda is a hardy herbaceous perennial that dies down in winter and returns each spring, slowly spreading into a wider clump. Lifting and dividing it every two or three years keeps it flowering well.

Will monarda flower in its first year from seed?

Most plants flower from their second summer. Sowing early indoors, in March, gives some plants a chance to flower late in the first season. Once established it flowers every year from July.

Can you make tea from bee balm?

Yes. The leaves and flowers can be used fresh or dried for a herbal tea with a citrus and mint flavour. Pick in the morning and dry in small bunches out of direct sun.

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday.
