Impatiens mirabilis is an unusual caudiciform species of impatiens native to limestone forests of Southeast Asia. It develops a woody, swollen caudex which can exceed 60 cm in diameter, acting as a water reservoir to sustain the plant during dry periods. From this base, slender upright stems grow, bearing broad, obovate leaves arranged in terminal clusters. The foliage is soft-textured, pale to mid-green, and lightly veined. Its flowers are helmet-shaped, cream to yellow in colour, and appear intermittently throughout the year in cultivation, although they are more frequent in summer.
This species grows relatively slowly and benefits from a stable, warm environment with careful attention to watering. Because of its growth habit and moisture needs, it is well-suited for cultivation in containers with excellent drainage. It may briefly shed leaves during dormancy or if humidity drops too low. The plant is best grown for its structural form and unusual caudex, which becomes more pronounced with age.
Native to: Southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, including Langkawi Island, where it grows on limestone cliffs and in seasonally dry tropical forests at low elevations.
Water: Allow the substrate to dry out partially between waterings. Keep lightly moist during active growth but avoid saturated soil. Reduce watering during cooler months or periods of dormancy.
Light: Prefers bright, filtered light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but should be protected from intense afternoon exposure.
Humidity: Prefers humidity above 60%. Will grow in average household humidity but benefits from occasional misting or placement near a humidity tray during dry periods.
Temperature: Grows best in temperatures between 20–28°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
Please note: The leaves on these suffer damage fairly easily in transit. However, they naturally drop leaves as the stem grows, so it is nothing to worry about.
