The Hosta 'Gold Standard', a classic plantain lily and one of the most loved variegated hostas ever raised, brings a glowing pool of gold to the shady garden. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves emerge fresh green in spring, then light up to luminous gold with a narrow green to blue-green margin as the season warms, forming a generous, weed-smothering clump. It is the definitive foliage perennial for lifting a dim corner and a superb companion to ferns, trees and other plants for shade.
Grown for its bold foliage rather than its flowers, 'Gold Standard' is a deciduous, herbaceous perennial that dies back to a dormant crown each autumn and returns reliably every spring. Slender scapes of lily-like lavender flowers rise above the leaves in mid to late summer, a welcome draw for bees and other pollinators. Fully hardy at RHS H7, it needs no winter protection and settles in for decades.
Few plants earn their keep like a mature hosta. Use 'Gold Standard' to light up woodland edges and shaded exotic border plants schemes, or grow it in a large pot among your plants for pots where the foliage can be admired up close. It pairs beautifully with the cool-toned Hosta 'Chain Lightning' and sits comfortably among the lush planting of our wider hardy exotics range. Do keep an eye out for slugs and snails, which love hosta foliage, especially on soft spring growth.
Please note that hostas are toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten, so site them thoughtfully where pets graze. Every plant we supply is nursery-grown, carefully selected for a healthy crown and strong roots, and packed with care to arrive in superb condition.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.
Ordering in autumn or winter? Many hardy exotics arrive dormant or cut back right now. This is normal, and the best time to plant.

Arrived just like the photos - maybe even fuller. Healthy, well-acclimated, and straight into my collection with no issues.
Flawless leaves, stunning variegation, and clearly cared for by experts. It’s already a talking point in my home office.
Hard to find rare plants that are pet-safe. Ours arrived in perfect condition and looks amazing without any worry.
Hosta 'Gold Standard' needs partial shade or full shade and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.
RHS H7 · Hardy Exotic · below −20°C
Keep the soil consistently moist through the first two summers while the crown establishes, and never let it dry out. A spring mulch locks in moisture and feeds the clump. Watch for slugs and snails, which adore the fresh foliage, and lift and divide congested clumps in early spring to keep them vigorous.
Clump-forming
Jul-Aug
Deciduous
Remove faded flower stems, then cut the foliage right back after it collapses in autumn or tidy in late winter; lift and divide congested clumps in early spring.
Harmful if eaten. Hostas are toxic to cats, dogs and horses. The saponins they contain can cause vomiting, drooling and diarrhoea if pets chew the leaves, so site them thoughtfully where animals graze.
