Hosta fortunei 'Ki Ren Jyaku' is a striking Japanese plantain lily grown for its glowing yellow foliage and, unusually, its beautiful double flowers. The broad, softly textured leaves hold a rich buttery yellow through the season, and in summer it produces pale lavender double blooms that mark it out as a real collector's hosta.
A fully hardy, deciduous herbaceous perennial (RHS H7), it dies back to the ground in late autumn and returns in mid to late spring, so expect bare soil over winter. The nectar-rich flowers are enjoyed by bees. For more on the seasonal habit of hardy exotics, see our what to expect guide.
The luminous yellow leaves light up an exotic border or a shady corner and grow just as well in a large container. With its double summer flowers it also sits happily among shade-loving plants for pollinators. Set it against darker-leaved varieties such as Hosta 'First Blush' for contrast.
Every plant is nursery-grown, part of our wider hardy exotics range, and carefully packed to arrive in top condition.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.
Ordering in autumn or winter? Many hardy exotics arrive dormant or cut back right now. This is normal, and the best time to plant.

Flawless leaves, stunning variegation, and clearly cared for by experts. It’s already a talking point in my home office.
Hard to find rare plants that are pet-safe. Ours arrived in perfect condition and looks amazing without any worry.
Hosta fortunei 'Ki Ren Jyaku' needs partial shade or full sun and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.
RHS H7 · Hardy Exotic · below −20°C
Keep the soil evenly moist through the first two summers, watering deeply in dry weather. Grows well in a pot or the ground; if potted, use a loam-based compost and never let it dry out. Mulch each spring and protect the new shoots from slugs and snails.
Clump-forming
Jul-Aug
Deciduous
Remove faded flower stems; cut foliage back after autumn collapse or tidy in late winter; divide congested clumps in spring.
Toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten. Hostas contain saponins that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of appetite in pets, so site with care where animals graze. The foliage is also a favourite of slugs and snails.
