Hosta 'Brim Cup' is a lovely small plantain lily with distinctly cupped leaves: rich green in the centre and merging into a broad, deep cream margin that fades to white with age. As the puckered leaves mature they curl upwards into neat little cups, building into a dense, characterful clump that is tailor-made for the front of a shady border or a special pot.
Fully hardy right across the UK (RHS H7), it is a deciduous perennial that dies back each autumn and reshoots reliably every spring. Upright stems of bell-shaped, near-white to pale lavender flowers appear in late summer. As it disappears over winter, pair it with evergreens for structure and see our hardy exotics: what to expect guide for seasonal timings.
Its compact size makes it perfect for edging an exotic border or planting in a container from our plants for pots range, where the cupped leaves can be admired close up. The late-summer flowers draw in pollinators. For a giant hosta to plant behind it, try Hosta 'Yellow River'.
Part of our hardy exotics collection, every plant is nursery-grown, carefully selected for a strong crown and healthy roots, and packed with care to arrive in superb condition.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.
Ordering in autumn or winter? Many hardy exotics arrive dormant or cut back right now. This is normal, and the best time to plant.

Hosta 'Brim Cup' needs partial shade or full shade and moist but well-drained soil. It is very hardy, standing the coldest UK winters outdoors.
RHS H7 · Hardy Exotic · below −20°C
Keep evenly moist through the first two summers, and never let container plants dry out. Protect the emerging spring shoots from slugs and snails and divide congested clumps in spring.

Deciduous
Remove faded flower stems, cut foliage back after autumn collapse or tidy in late winter; divide congested clumps in spring.
Toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten. Hostas contain saponins, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and general depression in pets that chew the foliage. Best sited away from grazing pets.
