Description

Cape gooseberry gives you a fruit the shops charge a premium for: glossy orange berries, each wrapped in its own papery lantern. Physalis peruviana, also sold as golden berry, is a South American relative of the tomato, and the fruit tastes like a sweet cherry tomato with a sharp, almost cranberry finish. Eat them from the husk, add them to fruit salads and jams, or dip them in melted chocolate. It crops well in a large pot on a sunny patio or in a greenhouse.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors February to April at 18 to 21°C, about 0.5 cm deep.
  • Germination takes 7 to 15 days in warmth, sometimes longer.
  • Plant out 30 to 40 cm apart after the last frost, or keep in a cool greenhouse, in full sun with support for the lax stems.
  • Water well, but go easy on feed: rich conditions reduce flowering.
  • Grows to about 70 cm to 1 m tall and 45 cm wide; a 30 cm pot is the minimum.
  • Fruit ripens from late summer into autumn, roughly 90 to 120 days after sowing.
  • Tender perennial, usually grown as an annual in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grow cape gooseberries in a pot?

Yes. A pot at least 30 cm across on a sunny, sheltered patio or in a greenhouse suits it well, and makes it easy to move under cover in autumn while the last fruits ripen. Give the stems a cane or two for support.

How do I know when cape gooseberries are ripe?

The husk dries out, turns papery and straw coloured, and the berry inside is a deep golden orange. Ripe fruit often drops to the ground on its own. Only eat fully ripe berries: unripe fruit and the leaves are not edible.

Is cape gooseberry perennial?

It is a perennial in its native South America but is tender to frost, so in the UK most gardeners sow it fresh each spring. A plant cut back and kept frost-free over winter can crop earlier the following year.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
