🌿 Plant Care Tips

Fockea edulis is a caudiciform succulent vine native to southern Africa, commonly known as the Hottentot Bread Plant. It develops a swollen, woody caudex that acts as a water-storage organ, gradually becoming rounded to irregular in shape and grey to pale brown in colour. From this base, slender twining stems emerge, carrying small, opposite, oval green leaves that are smooth and slightly leathery.

Fockea edulis is a fast-growing climber during the active season, producing long, flexible vines that benefit from a support such as a trellis or hoop. In warm indoor conditions it can remain in leaf for much of the year, although growth may slow in winter. The caudex thickens over time when grown in a free-draining mix and bright conditions, making it perfect for growing indoors in the UK.

Native to: South Africa and parts of southern Africa including the Eastern and Western Cape, where it grows in dry savanna and scrub. It typically develops a partially exposed caudex above rocky or sandy soils, with vines scrambling through surrounding vegetation.

Water: Water thoroughly when approximately the top half of the compost has dried out. During active growth in spring and summer, this may mean watering regularly but allowing full drainage. In winter, reduce watering significantly and keep the compost mostly dry, only watering lightly to prevent the caudex from shrivelling.

Light: Bright indirect light to dappled shade is ideal. It can tolerate some gentle direct sun in the morning or late afternoon, but strong midday sun through glass may scorch the leaves and overheat the caudex.

Humidity: Average indoor humidity (around 40–60%) is suitable. It does not require elevated humidity and copes well with normal UK household conditions.

Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–30 °C during active growth. Keep above 10 °C in winter and protect from cold draughts, as it is not frost tolerant.
