Long-leaf Wax Flower
Eriostemon myoporoides
Long-leaf Wax Flower
Eriostemon myoporoides, now correctly known as Philotheca myoporoides, is a beautiful evergreen shrub from eastern Australia, prized by collectors for its long season of waxy, star-shaped blooms. Often sold simply as eriostemon or the Long-leaf Wax Flower, this is a refined, well-behaved eriostemon plant that brings a touch of the exotic to sheltered UK gardens and patios.
From late winter into spring the bush is smothered in clusters of five-petalled white flowers, opening from pretty pink-flushed buds so the plant seems dusted in stars. The narrow, deep green leaves are aromatic, releasing a fresh citrus scent when brushed or crushed, a classic trait of the rue family (Rutaceae). It builds slowly into a neat, rounded shrub of around 1 to 1.5 m, making it a manageable choice where space is limited.
How and where to grow
Like most members of its family, philotheca myoporoides wants a warm, bright spot and very sharp drainage. Plant it in light, neutral to acidic soil that is low in phosphorus, ideally against a sunny south or west-facing wall where it gains extra warmth and shelter from cold winds. It strongly dislikes heavy wet clay and chalky, limey ground, so on difficult soils a container of gritty ericaceous compost is the reliable route.
- Position: full sun, sheltered from cold winds
- Soil: free-draining, lime-free, low in phosphorus
- Size: around 1 to 1.5 m tall and wide
- Hardiness: borderline (RHS H3), to roughly -5C
In UK conditions eriostemon myoporoides uk growers get the best results treating it as a half-hardy patio shrub: stand it outside for spring and summer, then move it somewhere bright and frost-free over winter. A light trim after flowering keeps it dense and tidy. Water freely while establishing, then let it dry between drinks once settled.
Every plant we send out is nursery-grown and carefully selected for healthy roots and strong, even growth, so your Long-leaf Wax Flower arrives ready to settle in and reward you with years of fragrant, star-spangled spring colour.

It is borderline hardy (RHS H3), coping with brief dips to about -5C in a warm, sheltered spot. In most of the UK it is safest grown in a container so it can be moved into a frost-free greenhouse, porch or conservatory for the coldest months.
-
Choose the sunniest, most sheltered position available, such as the foot of a south or west-facing wall. Good light and shelter from cold winds give the best display of waxy spring flowers.
-
It forms a neat, rounded evergreen shrub reaching roughly 1 to 1.5 m tall and wide over several years. Container growing and light pruning keep it more compact, making it ideal for patios.
-
Yes, the Long-leaf Wax Flower is evergreen, holding its narrow, citrus-scented green leaves all year round. This gives structure and aromatic foliage even outside the spring flowering season.
-
Absolutely, and a pot is often the best approach in the UK. Use a free-draining, lime-free (ericaceous) compost with added grit, and you can simply lift the whole plant under cover before hard frosts arrive.
