Dryopteris koidzumiana is one of the most quietly spectacular hardy ferns you can grow, prized for the warm coppery-red and rose-pink colour of its emerging spring fronds. A choice Japanese wood fern from the mountain woodlands of Japan, it brings a flush of unexpected colour to the shade garden before settling into elegant, glossy green for the rest of the season. For collectors of unusual dryopteris and anyone building a shaded planting with year-round interest, it is a real find.
The magic is all in the new growth. In spring the tightly coiled croziers unfurl in vivid tones of salmon, rose and copper, glowing against darker companions before maturing to a deep, lacquered green. As a largely evergreen fern it holds structure through the colder months, earning its place among the most reliable evergreen ferns UK gardeners can plant for winter form. It builds into a neat, vase-shaped clump around 40-60cm tall and wide, reaching its full size in roughly two to five years.
Like most hardy ferns, this dryopteris fern is happiest in partial to full shade, making it perfect for a north or east-facing border, a woodland edge or a spot beneath trees and shrubs. Give it a humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil on the acid to neutral side, and keep it sheltered from drying winds and harsh midday sun, which can scorch the fronds. It is fully hardy across the UK; simply trim away any tired old fronds in late winter to make way for that brilliant new spring display. It also takes happily to a shaded container in a loam-based compost.
Each fern is nursery-grown and despatched as a strong, well-rooted plant, ready to establish quickly and reward you with years of woodland colour.
