Yes. This Japanese wood fern is fully hardy in the UK, tolerating temperatures well below freezing. In milder gardens it holds its fronds through winter as an evergreen, while in colder, more exposed spots the older fronds may tatter and are best trimmed away in early spring.

It is a woodland fern and thrives in partial to full shade, making it ideal for a shady border, north-facing bed or beneath trees and shrubs. Avoid hot, dry, full sun, which scorches the fronds; dappled light brings out the best colour in the new growth.

The standout feature is the spring flush of croziers, which unfurl in warm coppery-red and rose-pink tones before maturing to glossy green. Cutting back tired old fronds in late winter encourages a fresh, vivid display.

It forms a tidy clump roughly 40-60cm tall and wide, reaching full size in two to five years. Its modest size and shuttlecock habit make it well suited to a shaded container in a loam-based, free-draining compost kept reliably moist.
