Description

'Mammoth Long Island' is the big, generous dill: tall, leafy plants topped by wide umbels of yellow flowers that turn into the seed heads used for pickling. This American heirloom gives plenty of feathery blue-green leaves for fish, potatoes, cucumbers and yoghurt sauces before it flowers. The flower heads bring in ladybirds, hoverflies and other aphid eaters, so it pulls its weight in the vegetable plot as well as the kitchen. Anethum graveolens grows fast from a direct sowing and also does well in a deep container.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors where it is to grow from April to July, every few weeks for a steady supply of leaves
  • It dislikes being moved, so sow direct or in modules rather than seed trays
  • Sow about 1 cm deep in rows
  • Germination takes 7 to 21 days
  • Full sun, sheltered from strong wind, in well-drained soil
  • Grows to about 90 cm tall; taller plants may need a cane
  • Pick leaves from about eight weeks after sowing; seed heads ripen in late summer
  • Hardy annual

What you receive: a packet of about 150 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow dill seeds?

Sow outdoors from April to July. Dill is quick to run to seed, so short rows every three to four weeks give a longer supply of leaves. It does not transplant well, so sow it where it will grow.

Can I grow dill next to fennel?

It is best kept apart. Dill and fennel can cross-pollinate, and saved seed from either may then give plants with a muddled flavour. If you only grow them for leaves this matters less.

How do I harvest dill seed?

Leave a few plants to flower and set seed. Cut the heads once the seeds turn brown, hang them upside down in a paper bag in a dry place, and the seeds will drop as they dry.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
