The Cyrtomium falcatum, or Japanese holly fern, is one of the boldest evergreen ferns for a shady garden, instantly recognisable by its glossy, leathery fronds of holly-shaped, dark green leaflets. Unlike the soft, lacy look of most ferns, it has real substance and shine, holding its architectural form right through winter and bringing a tough, tropical texture to borders, courtyards and coastal gardens. It is a superb problem-solver for dry, shady corners where little else thrives.
Hardy in most of the UK to around -10C once established (roughly RHS H4), the holly fern is evergreen and notably salt-tolerant, so it shrugs off exposure that would tatter more delicate ferns. In the coldest, most exposed inland gardens give it a sheltered spot or a winter mulch. It is an easy, rewarding addition to any scheme of plants for shade.
Water regularly through the first season to establish a strong crown, after which it is impressively self-reliant, even in dry shade. It is generally non-toxic and pet-friendly, and its evergreen structure makes it a natural for a shaded patio container, sitting happily among your plants for pots or the front of an exotic border. It pairs beautifully with strap-leaved ferns such as Asplenium scolopendrium.
Every fern we send is nursery-grown and carefully selected for a healthy crown and strong roots. For how hardy ferns settle in through the seasons, see our what to expect notes.
All plants are covered by our 7-day live arrival guarantee. We pack every order in protective, sustainable packaging designed to keep your plants safe in transit, and every plant is checked before it ships. On the rare occasion something is not right on arrival, we will make it good, provided the plant is still in its original nursery pot.
