Description

'Spacemaster' packs a full cucumber harvest into a fraction of the space, with short vines that suit a patio pot, a raised bed or a small greenhouse. It was bred in New York State as a compact slicing cucumber, and the dark green fruits are crisp and mild, best picked at around 15 to 20 cm. Slice into salads or pick small for pickling. Cucumis sativus 'Spacemaster' crops outdoors in a warm, sheltered spot, and a short cane or trellis keeps the fruit clean and the leaves dry.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors April to May, one seed per small pot, at 20 to 25°C
  • Sow outdoors, or plant out, in late May to June once frosts are over
  • Sow 1 to 2 cm deep, with the seed on its edge
  • Germination takes 7 to 14 days
  • Full sun, sheltered from wind, in rich, moisture-retentive soil or a large container of at least 30 cm
  • Vines reach about 70 cm, spreading about 30 cm
  • Harvest July to September, about eight to ten weeks from sowing; regular picking keeps it fruiting
  • Tender annual: not frost hardy

Can I grow Spacemaster cucumber in a pot?

Yes, it is one of the better cucumbers for containers. Use a pot of at least 30 cm across filled with rich compost, and give it a short support. Container plants need watering daily in hot weather and a liquid feed once fruit starts to form.

Does Spacemaster need a greenhouse?

No. It is an outdoor type and crops well in a warm, sheltered, sunny spot from June onwards. A greenhouse or cold frame simply gives an earlier start and a longer season.

When should I sow cucumber seeds in the UK?

Sow indoors in April or May, or outdoors from late May into June once the soil has warmed. Cucumbers dislike cold and root disturbance, so sow one seed per pot and plant out without breaking up the root ball.

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday.
