Description

Cosmos 'Psyche Mix' gives months of flowers from one packet: large, silky blooms in crimson, lavender-pink and white held over feathery foliage from midsummer until the first frosts. Each flower has a golden centre that draws in bees and hoverflies, and the more you cut, the more the plants produce, so they make a generous cut flower for jugs and vases. Cosmos bipinnatus 'Psyche Mix' grows to around 80 cm, with fine, fern-like leaves that keep the plants looking light and airy in a border, a cottage garden or a large patio pot.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to April, or directly outdoors May to June once frosts have passed.
  • Sow 5 mm to 1 cm deep.
  • Germination takes 7 to 14 days at 18 to 20°C.
  • Plant out after the last frost, 30 to 40 cm apart, in full sun; average, well-drained soil gives more flowers than rich soil.
  • Grows to about 80 cm tall and 30 cm wide.
  • Flowers July to October; cut or deadhead regularly to keep the blooms coming.
  • Half-hardy annual: frost tender, so sow fresh each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow cosmos seeds?

Sow indoors in March or April for the earliest flowers, then plant out once the risk of frost has passed in late May. You can also sow straight into the ground in May or June; these plants flower a little later but are just as good.

Do cosmos need deadheading?

Yes, regular deadheading or cutting for the vase keeps them flowering until autumn. Once a plant is allowed to set seed it slows down. Snip just above a pair of leaves and new flowering shoots follow.

Can I grow cosmos in pots?

Yes. Use a pot at least 30 cm across and plant one or two seedlings in multipurpose compost, in full sun. At around 80 cm tall they may need a short cane in an exposed spot, and pots need watering more often in hot weather.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
