Description

'Polka Dot Mix' takes the classic cornflower and adds a whole palette: blue, pink, red, lavender, white and deep maroon from a single sowing. The frilly, button-like flowers of Centaurea cyanus sit on wiry, silver-green stems from early summer, and they keep coming if you cut them. They last well in a vase, dry nicely and look at home in a cottage border, a wildlife patch or a large patio pot. Bees and butterflies visit all summer, and the goldfinches often take the seed heads in autumn if you leave a few.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors where they are to flower March to May, or September to October for earlier flowers next year
  • Or start indoors in modules February to April
  • Sow about 6 mm deep and thin to 20 to 30 cm apart
  • Germination takes 7 to 14 days
  • Full sun, in any well-drained soil, even poor ground
  • Grows to around 40 to 50 cm tall
  • Flowers June to September; cut or deadhead often for more blooms
  • A hardy annual

When should I sow cornflower seeds?

Sow outdoors in spring, from March to May, for flowers from early summer. An autumn sowing in September or October gives stronger plants that flower earlier the following year; protect them with a cloche or cold frame in a hard winter.

Can I grow cornflowers in a pot?

Yes. A container at least 30 cm wide and deep holds several plants. Use a free-draining compost, place it in full sun and pick the flowers regularly to keep them coming.

Do cornflowers come back every year?

Cornflowers are hardy annuals, so each plant flowers for one season and dies. Leave a few late flowers to set seed and they will often self-sow, or collect the seed and sow it again in spring.

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday.
