Description

Chervil is the chef's herb: lacy, bright green leaves with a gentle flavour somewhere between parsley and aniseed. 'Brussels Winter' is a cold-tolerant selection, so sowings in late summer keep giving leaves into autumn and through mild winters. Add it fresh to eggs, potatoes, fish and butter sauces; it is one of the French fines herbes. Anthriscus cerefolium is happiest in cool, lightly shaded corners where other herbs struggle, and its small white flowers draw in hoverflies and ladybirds.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors where it is to grow from March to May, and again August to September for autumn and winter picking
  • It dislikes transplanting, so sow direct or in modules rather than seed trays
  • Sow about 1 cm deep, or barely cover
  • Germination takes 10 to 21 days
  • Light shade in moist, fertile soil; hot sun and dry soil make it run to seed
  • Grows to about 30 to 40 cm tall
  • Pick leaves six to eight weeks after sowing; sow small batches every few weeks for a steady supply
  • Hardy annual; cover late sowings with a cloche in hard weather

What you receive: a packet of about 150 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Grow it alongside the other kitchen herbs in our seed collection, and sow into modules from our propagation supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow chervil seeds?

Sow from March to May for summer picking and from August to September for autumn and winter. Chervil runs to seed quickly in heat, so the cooler ends of the year suit it best. Small sowings every three or four weeks keep fresh leaves coming.

Can I grow chervil in a pot?

Yes. A pot of about 30 cm on a lightly shaded patio or a cool windowsill works well. Keep the compost moist at all times, as dry roots trigger flowering.

What does chervil taste like?

It has a soft, sweet flavour like a mild parsley with a hint of aniseed. The taste fades with heat and drying, so add it fresh at the end of cooking.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
