Description

Paris Market is the carrot for gardens where long carrots fail: it forms small round roots that sit near the surface and cope with shallow, stony or clay soil. This 19th-century French heirloom, also sold as Marché de Paris or Tonda di Parigi, has smooth orange skin and tender, sweet flesh in roots about 3 to 5 cm across. Roast them whole with a little of the green top left on, or pull them young for salads and lunchboxes. Because the roots are so short, Daucus carota 'Paris Market' is one of the best carrots for containers, window boxes and raised beds.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors March (under cloches) to July, in rows or straight into a container at least 20 cm deep.
  • Sow thinly, 1 cm deep, and thin seedlings to about 5 cm apart.
  • Germination takes 7 to 20 days, slower in cold soil.
  • Full sun to light shade, in loose soil that has not had fresh manure.
  • Foliage reaches about 20 cm; the roots are round and 3 to 5 cm across.
  • Ready 50 to 70 days after sowing, harvesting from June to October.
  • Grown as an annual crop and hardy; cover with fine mesh against carrot fly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grow Paris Market carrots in a pot?

Yes. The roots are round and short, so a container 20 cm deep is plenty. Sow thinly across the surface of multipurpose compost, keep it evenly moist and thin to about 5 cm apart.

When should I sow Paris Market carrot seeds?

From March under cloches or in a greenhouse, then outdoors every few weeks from April to July for a run of harvests. Roots are ready in roughly 50 to 70 days, so a July sowing still crops in autumn.

How do I keep carrot fly away?

Sow thinly so you need little thinning, as the scent of bruised foliage attracts the fly. Covering the row or pot with fine insect mesh from sowing is the most reliable protection. Raised containers also help, as the fly tends to stay low.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
