It is half-hardy rather than fully hardy, so it won't reliably survive a hard British winter outdoors. In mild, sheltered southern gardens you can leave the rhizomes in the ground under a thick dry mulch, but in most of the UK it is safest to lift the rhizomes after the first frost and store them somewhere frost-free until spring.

Cannas are sun-lovers and 'Cannova Red Shades' flowers best in full sun, ideally in a warm, sheltered spot. It will tolerate a little light shade but you'll get fewer blooms and leggier growth, so give it the sunniest position you can.

This is one of the more compact, well-branched cannas, typically reaching around 90-120cm tall with a spread of about 45-50cm in a single season. Its tidy habit makes it far better suited to smaller borders and containers than the towering older varieties.

Yes, its compact size makes it an excellent container plant. Use a large pot with a soil-based, free-draining compost, keep it well watered and fed through summer, then move the whole pot into a frost-free shed or greenhouse to overwinter the rhizome.

Cannas have no significant reported toxicity to people, dogs or cats, so this is a good choice for family gardens. As with any plant, it's still sensible to discourage pets and children from eating it.
