Description

'Erfurter Orangefarbige' is a pot marigold selected in Erfurt for its strong orange flowers and generous petal count. The double blooms are a clear, saturated orange that lights up a border, a vegetable bed or a balcony pot from early summer into autumn. The petals of Calendula officinalis have a mild, slightly peppery sweetness: scatter them over salads, fold them into butter and soft cheese, or dry them to add colour to soups and breads. Bees, hoverflies and ladybirds visit the open flowers, which is why so many growers tuck it in among tomatoes and carrots.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors February to March, or outdoors where it is to flower March to June
  • Sow about 1 cm deep and thin seedlings to 20 to 25 cm apart
  • Germination takes 7 to 15 days
  • Full sun, in light, well-drained soil; rich, wet soil gives leafy plants and fewer flowers
  • Grows to around 30 to 50 cm tall
  • Flowers about eight weeks after sowing, June to October; deadhead to keep it blooming
  • A hardy annual that often self-seeds

What you receive: a packet of about 45 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow calendula seeds?

Sow outdoors from March to June where the plants are to flower, or start them indoors in February and March for earlier blooms. A sowing in September gives sturdy plants that flower the following spring.

Are calendula flowers edible?

Yes, the petals are edible and have a mild, slightly sweet and peppery taste. Use them fresh in salads and on egg dishes, or dry them to colour rice, soups and baking. The leaves are bitter, so most cooks use only the petals.

Is calendula the same as marigold?

Calendula is often called pot marigold, but it is a different plant from the French and African marigolds (Tagetes) sold as bedding. Calendula is a hardy annual from Europe with edible petals, and it can be sown outdoors much earlier in the year.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
