Description

Borage is about the easiest edible flower you can sow, and this mix gives you the classic sky-blue stars alongside a white-flowered form. Borago officinalis makes a bushy, bristly plant with nodding clusters of five-pointed flowers and young leaves that taste faintly of cucumber. Float the flowers in a jug of Pimm's or lemonade, freeze them in ice cubes or scatter them over salads and cakes. Bees work the flowers all day, which makes borage a good neighbour for tomatoes, strawberries and cucumbers.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors where it is to flower from April to June, or start in pots under cover in March.
  • Sow 2 to 3 cm deep and thin seedlings to about 25 cm apart.
  • Germination takes 7 to 15 days.
  • Full sun or light shade, in well-drained soil. Skip the fertiliser: rich soil gives leaves at the expense of flowers.
  • Grows to about 60 cm tall and 30 cm wide, and fits a 30 cm pot.
  • Flowers June to September. Pick flowers just as they open, in the cool of the morning, and deadhead to keep them coming.
  • Hardy annual that self-seeds freely, so one sowing often returns year after year.

What you receive: a packet of about 50 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are borage flowers edible?

Yes. The flowers have a mild, cucumber-like taste and are used to decorate drinks, salads and desserts, fresh or candied. Pull each flower gently out of its hairy green sepals before use. Young leaves can also be eaten, though older ones turn coarse and bristly.

When should I sow borage seeds?

Sow outdoors from April to June, straight into the spot where it will flower, as borage grows fast and does not need starting indoors. For earlier flowers, sow in pots under cover in March and plant out in spring.

Will borage come back every year?

Borage is an annual, so each plant lives for one season, but it drops plenty of seed and seedlings usually appear the following spring. Deadhead the flowers as they fade if you want to limit how far it spreads.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
