Description

Bull's Blood earns its place twice over: its glossy, deep burgundy leaves are some of the darkest foliage in the vegetable garden, and below them sit sweet, dark red roots. Pick young leaves for baby-leaf salads and microgreens, or wilt larger ones like spinach. Pull the roots small for roasting and pickling, or let them size up for juicing. This 19th-century heirloom, developed from the old French beet Crapaudine, has been grown in British cottage gardens since Victorian times as much for its looks as its crop. Beta vulgaris 'Bull's Blood' is handsome enough to edge a flower border or fill a patio container.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow outdoors March (under cloches) to July, or start in modules under cover from February.
  • Sow 2.5 cm deep and thin to about 10 cm apart.
  • Germination takes 7 to 14 days; soaking the seed for an hour first helps.
  • Full sun, in fertile, free-draining soil; containers need to be at least 30 cm deep.
  • Leaves reach about 40 to 50 cm tall.
  • Baby leaves in 4 to 6 weeks; roots from about 10 to 12 weeks, June to October.
  • Hardy, and grown as an annual crop (botanically a biennial).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you eat Bull's Blood beetroot leaves?

Yes, and many growers sow it mainly for the leaves. Young leaves are tender and colourful in salads, and older ones can be steamed or wilted like spinach or chard. Take a few leaves per plant at a time if you also want roots.

When should I sow Bull's Blood beetroot?

Sow outdoors from March under cloches, then every three or four weeks until July for a steady supply. Early sowings into modules under cover in February get a head start.

Why do several seedlings come up from one beetroot seed?

Each beetroot seed is actually a small cluster of seeds, so two to four seedlings usually appear together. Thin them to the strongest one once they are a few centimetres tall, and eat the thinnings as microgreens.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
