Description

'Baron Solemacher' is the alpine strawberry to grow when you want flavour over size. Small, deep red, cone shaped berries carry a heady, perfumed sweetness that big supermarket strawberries never match, and the plants keep fruiting from early summer until the first frosts. First offered by the German seed merchant F.C. Heinemann in 1935, Fragaria vesca 'Baron Solemacher' forms compact clumps for pots, window boxes and bed edges.

Sowing and growing

  • Sow indoors March to May, or outdoors in pots or a cold frame April to June
  • Press the fine seed onto the surface of damp seed compost and do not cover it; keep it at around 20°C and never let it dry out
  • Germination is slow and uneven: allow 15 to 30 days
  • Grow in partial shade or sun, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil
  • Plants reach about 15 cm tall and 15 cm wide
  • First berries can follow about three to four months after sowing
  • A hardy perennial that crops again every year

What you receive: a packet of about 250 seeds from Piccolo Seeds, with growing instructions on the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow alpine strawberry seeds?

Sow indoors from March to May so the seedlings have a long first season. You can also sow into pots or a cold frame outside from April to June, but the seed is tiny and germinates more reliably under cover where the compost stays evenly moist.

Why are my alpine strawberry seeds slow to germinate?

Alpine strawberry seed often takes two to four weeks to come up, and not every seed sprouts at once. It needs light, so leave it uncovered on the surface, keep the compost at around 20°C and never let it dry out, even for a few hours.

Can I grow alpine strawberries in a pot?

Yes. The plants stay around 15 cm tall and wide, so a 20 to 30 cm pot or a window box suits them well. Keep them watered in summer and give a little shade in the hottest part of the day.

What is your returns policy?

We always aim to make sure our customers love our products, but if you do need to return an order within 14 days of purchase (not including plants*), or any items are damaged, we’re happy to help. Just email us directly at hello@growtropicals.com, and we’ll take you through the process.

Please note: we cannot be held liable for any packaging costs should the original packaging be discarded.

*Unfortunately we cannot accept returns of undamaged plants as these are perishable items and are not saleable upon return. If a plant is damaged, we will compensate for this as per our live arrival guarantee.

When will my order arrive and how much is shipping?

When placing your order, you can choose from three dispatch speeds to suit your needs: Economy (prepared and shipped within 4-5 days), Standard (3-5 days), or Express (dispatched the very next day). Please keep in mind that "dispatch" refers to the time it takes our team to prepare and pack your items before handing them over to the courier, not the total delivery time.

Shipping costs are based on your total order value and will be calculated at checkout, with free shipping automatically applied to all orders over £60. For a full breakdown of shipping prices see our Help Centre.

Additionally, to protect the health and quality of our live plants, orders containing plants are exclusively shipped Monday through Thursday. This careful scheduling prevents your plants from being stuck in a dark shipping depot over the weekend, ensuring they arrive at your door vibrant and healthy.
