Push the probe in slowly to about two thirds of the depth of the root ball, away from the main stem and away from the side of the pot. The middle ring of compost, halfway between the trunk and the rim, is the most representative spot.
For larger pots over 20 cm, take readings from two or three different spots and use the lowest one. Compost dries unevenly in big pots, particularly if the plant has a one-sided root system.
Leave the probe in place for at least 30 to 60 seconds before reading the dial. The needle moves slowly.
What the Readings Mean
Most meters use a 1 to 10 scale divided into three zones: dry, moist, and wet. The exact watering trigger depends on the plant:
- Cacti, succulents, Agave, Sansevieria, ZZ plant: wait until the meter reads at the bottom of the dry zone (1 to 2), then water. Better to wait an extra day than to water early.
- Most tropical foliage (Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Anthurium): water when the reading drops to the dry zone (2 to 3). These plants like a partial dry-down, not a desert.
- Calathea, ferns, Maranta, peace lilies: water when the reading hits the lower end of the moist zone (4 to 5). These do not enjoy fully drying out.
- Carnivorous plants and bog species: ignore the meter; these want to stay wet at all times and use rainwater or distilled.
The Mistakes That Give False Readings
Three things skew moisture meter readings, and all three are common.
Fertiliser build-up increases conductivity, so a heavily fed pot may read moist even when the soil is dry. If you have just fed, give the dial less weight than the feel of the soil.
Substrate type matters more than people expect. Chunky aroid mixes, Pon, and other inorganic media often read drier than they actually are because air pockets break the electrical path between the probes. With these substrates the meter is more of a rough guide than a precise tool.
Mineral-heavy tap water raises conductivity straight after watering and gives an artificially wet reading. Wait an hour before checking after a water.
How to Look After the Meter Itself
Wipe the probes clean and dry after every use. Wet probes left in a drawer corrode quickly, and once corroded the readings drift. Do not leave the meter in a pot between waterings; the constant exposure to fertiliser and moisture shortens its life dramatically and most cheap meters die within a month if used that way.
If your meter starts reading the same number no matter which pot you push it into, the probes have either corroded or the contact spring inside has failed. Replace it; calibration is not something most consumer meters allow.
