Evergreen plants are the backbone of a garden. They hold their leaves through winter, so the structure, colour and cover stay put when everything else has died back.
Evergreens do the quiet, year-round work that makes a garden feel finished. While deciduous plants come and go, an evergreen holds its shape and colour through the bleakest months, giving the eye something to settle on and the garden a permanent framework. They are also the best plants for privacy and screening, since the cover never drops in winter when you can see straight through everything else.
The plants here range from bold architectural foliage to neat structural shrubs, palms and grasses that keep their leaves. Use them as a backbone that the seasonal plants weave around, as year-round screening along a boundary, or as strong single specimens in pots by a door. A garden with a good spine of evergreens looks good in January as well as July.

Frequently Asked Questions
They keep their leaves all year, so they give a garden permanent structure, colour and cover. That makes them the backbone of a planting scheme and the best choice for year-round privacy and screening.
Most are low-maintenance. They rarely need cutting back beyond the odd tidy-up, and because they do not drop all their leaves at once, there is far less clearing up than with deciduous plants.
They are the best choice for it. Since the foliage stays put through winter, an evergreen screen or hedge keeps you private all year, unlike deciduous plants that thin out and let the view through once the leaves fall.
Yes, a little. Evergreens shed and replace old leaves gradually through the year rather than dropping the lot in autumn, so they always look clothed even though the individual leaves are being renewed.
