The first flowers of spring matter more than any others, arriving when the garden has been bare for months and the pollinators are hungry. A good spring display sets the tone for the whole year and gives early bees a vital feed as they emerge.
The plants here flower across March, April and May, so mixing a few gives you a steady run rather than one short burst. Many are happy in borders and pots, and plenty suit a lightly shaded spot under trees that will be in full leaf later on. Plant in autumn or early spring for the best start.
Everything is grown for UK gardens and sent out well rooted, ready to plant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Autumn and early spring are both good times, which lets the roots settle before the plant puts its energy into flowering. Container-grown plants like these can go in whenever the ground is workable.
Very. Early flowers are a lifeline for bees waking from winter, when little else is in bloom. Planting a few is one of the simplest ways to help pollinators.
Many spring flowers are woodland plants that bloom before the tree canopy closes over, so they cope well with light shade. Check the aspect listed on each plant.
Mix plants that flower in March, April and May rather than all at once. Each plant page lists its flowering months so you can plan a continuous run.
