🌿 Plant Care Tips

Begonia 'Speckled' is a rhizomatous hybrid begonia of unknown origin from a Dutch nursery. The leaves are the main appeal, generally featuring a broad, ovate shape with an asymmetrical base. The upper surface of the foliage is a dark to medium green, heavily patterned with contrasting, irregular silver or cream speckles that give the plant its common name. The stems and petioles are often a contrasting reddish hue. New leaves emerge with this signature spotted pattern.

Native to: This plant is a horticultural hybrid. The rhizomatous group is the largest and most diverse category of Begonia, with species originating mainly from Central and South America, as well as Asia and Africa.

Water: Keep the well-draining soil evenly moist, but never allow it to become saturated or waterlogged, which can lead to rhizome rot. Allow the top 1/3 of the growing medium to dry out completely before rewatering.

Light: Prefers bright filtered light, which mimics the dappled light of the forest understory. Adequate light is necessary to maintain the striking colour and contrast of the silver speckles. Avoid all direct, intense sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity, ideally 50% or higher. Dry air can cause the leaves to develop brown, crispy margins. The rhizomatous begonias are commonly grown as houseplants, and their smaller stature, particularly when young, makes them suitable for terrarium environments.

Temperature: Maintain a stable indoor temperature between 18–24 °C. This plant is not frost-tolerant; temperatures should not drop below 15 °C.
