Most gardens peak in summer and then fall quiet, which is exactly why autumn flowers are so valuable. Blooming into September, October and beyond, they stretch the season by weeks and give late bees a crucial last feed before winter. The lower, softer autumn light suits warm colours especially well.
The plants here flower into the back end of the year, and many combine late blooms with good autumn foliage for a double display. Most prefer a sunny spot and tie in beautifully with ornamental grasses, which come into their own at the same time. Plant now to fill the gap that so many borders leave.
All grown for UK gardens and sent out well rooted.
Several here bloom well into October and November, particularly the later daisies and salvias. The flowering months on each plant page show exactly how late each one runs.
Very. Late flowers give bees a final feed before winter, when almost nothing else is blooming. A few autumn plants make a real difference to garden wildlife.
Ornamental grasses are the classic partner, peaking at the same time with seed heads and warm tones. Plants with good autumn leaf colour also lift the display.
Most flower best in a sunny, open spot, which also helps them ripen before winter. A few tolerate light shade. Check the aspect on each plant page.
