Mammillaria elegans, often referred to as the Elegant Pincushion Cactus, is a compact, globular cactus known for its symmetrical shape and dense arrangement of spines. Its body is a soft green, with tubercles arranged in a neat spiral pattern, and the spines are fine and white, giving the plant a delicate, lacy appearance. During the growing season, this cactus often produces a charming crown of small, pink to purple flowers, adding seasonal interest to its already attractive form.
This species is well-suited to indoor cultivation, particularly for growers with limited space. It is slow-growing and remains small, making it ideal for windowsills or small pots. Mammillaria elegans is also a hardy and forgiving plant, provided its watering needs are met and it is kept in well-draining soil.
Mammillaria elegans is native to the arid regions of Mexico, where it grows in rocky soils and dry grasslands. Its natural habitat ensures it is well-adapted to drought and bright light.
Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During spring and summer, water every 2–3 weeks, adjusting based on temperature and pot size. Reduce watering to once a month or less during autumn and winter when the plant enters dormancy. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
This cactus thrives in bright, indirect light or a few hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing window is ideal, though it can tolerate partial sunlight as long as it receives enough brightness to maintain its compact shape.
Mammillaria elegans prefers low to moderate humidity levels, around 30–50%. It does not require additional humidity and is well-suited to typical indoor conditions in the UK.
Maintain a temperature range of 18–26°C during the growing season. The plant can tolerate temperatures as low as 7°C but should be protected from frost and prolonged cold. Keep it away from cold draughts, particularly in winter, to ensure its health.

Mammillaria is the genus that taught most UK collectors how to grow cacti. Give them a south window, gritty compost, and almost no winter water, and they will flower in a crown every spring.
