🌿 Plant Care Tips

Stenospermation albifolium is a terrestrial aroid from the Central Andes of Colombia. It was described in 2023 and is known from Caldas, especially the Selva de Florencia area near Samaná, where it grows in wet tropical forest-edge habitat at around 1200 to 1400 m elevation.

Stenospermation albifolium has erect leaves with elliptic, leathery blades that are dark green above and pale green to whitish beneath, with many visible lateral veins. Mature inflorescences carry a white, boat-shaped spathe and a white spadix. For indoor growing in the UK, that habitat points to warm, humid conditions, steady moisture, and bright filtered light rather than strong direct sun.

Native to: Colombia, in the Central Andes of Caldas, especially the Selva de Florencia region near Samaná. It is a terrestrial species from wet tropical forest edges at mid elevation. Leaves are elliptic and erect, dark green on the upper surface and noticeably paler to whitish beneath. The inflorescence develops with a green immature spathe that matures white.

Water: Keep the compost evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Let only the upper small surface layer dry slightly before watering again, rather than allowing most of the pot to dry out. Because this species comes from a wet tropical habitat, it is likely to respond better to consistent moisture and an airy aroid mix than to repeated drying.

Light: Bright filtered light is best. A position close to a bright window with softened light works well. Avoid prolonged direct midday sun, which can stress the leaves, especially in summer. Its natural forest-edge habitat suggests it wants good brightness without harsh exposure.

Humidity: Aim for at least 70% humidity if possible. It should cope with slightly lower levels for short periods, but steadier high humidity will suit it better and help keep the foliage in better condition. Because it prefers high humidity and stays manageable compared with very large aroids, it is well suited to a terrarium or large cabinet while young.

Temperature: Keep it warm, ideally around 18 to 26°C, with little fluctuation and a minimum of about 16°C. Its mid-elevation wet tropical origin suggests it prefers mild warmth rather than heat extremes or cold conditions.
