Description

Sedum rubrotinctum 'Aurora', better known as the Pink Jelly Bean, is a plump little succulent covered in translucent, bean-shaped leaves that blush from soft mint-green to candy pink as the light grows brighter. It is the pastel version of the classic jelly bean plant, and the colour is the whole point: keep it in strong sun and the tips deepen to sherbet pink and coral.

Origins

Sedum rubrotinctum belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is a plant of garden origin, with parentage traced back to Mexico. 'Aurora' is a selected pink-toned cultivar. Like most stonecrops it evolved to store water in those swollen leaves, so it shrugs off dry spells and asks very little of you in return. It sits happily alongside the rest of our cacti and succulents and earns a place among our easy-going small plants.

Looking after it

Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally a south or west-facing windowsill, because light is what keeps the pink. Water only when the compost has dried out completely, then soak and drain fully; in winter, water barely at all. A free-draining, gritty mix is essential, so pot it into a proper succulent substrate and never let it sit wet. The leaves detach at a touch, which is mildly annoying but also how the plant propagates, so each dropped bean is a free new plant. As the stems lengthen and lean they make a pretty, spilling display in a raised pot or among our hanging plants.

Keep it above 5C and out of frost. The sap can irritate skin and the plant is mildly toxic if eaten, so site it away from nibbling pets and wash your hands after handling.

Why is my Pink Jelly Bean turning green instead of pink?

Colour is driven by light. In strong, direct sun the bean-shaped leaves flush pink, coral and red, but in a dim spot they fade back to plain green and the stems stretch out. Move it to the brightest windowsill you have, ideally south or west-facing, and the pink returns as the new growth hardens off.

How often should I water Sedum 'Aurora'?

Only when the compost has dried out completely. Give it a proper soak, let all the excess drain away, then leave it alone until it is bone dry again. Through winter it barely needs anything at all. Far more of these are lost to overwatering than to neglect, so when in doubt, wait.

Why do the leaves keep dropping off?

The plump leaves detach very easily, and a few will always come away when you move or repot the plant. That is normal for the jelly bean plant and not a sign of ill health. Each fallen leaf can be laid on top of dry compost to root and form a brand new plantlet, so it is one of the easiest succulents to propagate.

Is the Pink Jelly Bean safe for cats and dogs?

Treat it as mildly toxic. The sap can irritate skin on contact and the leaves may cause a stomach upset if eaten, so keep it out of reach of curious pets and children and wash your hands after handling or propagating it. Does my plant come with a pot?
Your plant will arrive in its nursery grow pot — the plastic pot it's been growing in. We don't include a decorative pot as standard, and there's a good reason for that: it means you get to choose one that fits your space and style, rather than being stuck with something that doesn't suit your home.

It also means you're not paying extra for a pot you might not want. The nursery pot is perfectly fine to keep your plant in for a while, just pop it inside a decorative cover pot or cache pot and you're good to go. When you're ready to repot (usually after a growing season or when roots start poking out the bottom), you can move it into something more permanent with fresh soil.

How big will my plant be when it arrives?
Every plant on our site includes the pot size (e.g. 12cm) and, where possible, an approximate height. That's the most reliable way to set your expectations, photos can sometimes make a plant look larger or smaller than it really is.

If you're thinking "that sounds quite small for the price," here's something worth knowing: younger, smaller plants almost always adapt better to your home than larger ones. They adjust faster to your light and humidity, put out new growth more quickly, and tend to establish stronger root systems long-term. A plant that grows into your space will usually outperform one that was already big when it arrived.

That said, every plant is an individual. The one you receive may vary slightly in height, shape, or fullness compared to the photo, that's the nature of living things, not a quality issue. What should I do when my plant arrives?
First things first, unbox it as soon as you can. Plants don't love being in dark boxes any more than you would, and the sooner yours is out and breathing, the better.

Remove all the packaging carefully, give the soil a check with your finger, and water lightly if it feels dry. Then find it a spot with appropriate light, but avoid putting it straight into harsh direct sun or next to a radiator. Think of it like arriving somewhere new after a long journey: it needs a moment to adjust.

It's completely normal for your plant to look a little tired or droopy after transit. This is called transit stress, and most plants bounce back within a week or two. You might see a yellow leaf or some drooping, don't panic, and resist the urge to overwater or start repotting straight away.

Our advice for the first couple of weeks: leave it in its nursery pot, water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry, and let it acclimatise to your home's light, temperature, and humidity. Once it's settled in and showing signs of new growth, you can think about repotting or moving it to its permanent spot.
