Begonia sp. Vietnam #2 is an unidentified rhizomatous species collected from Vietnam, known for its striking transformation as it matures. Juvenile leaves are intensely hairy and covered in pink or silver spots. These hairs give the plant a fuzzy appearance and are especially noticeable on young growth. As the plant matures, the leaves transition to a more subdued green with simple, silvery markings, and the dense hairs fade away.
This Begonia grows in a low, spreading habit, typical of rhizomatous species, and develops compact clusters of leaves along short, creeping stems. The leaf shape is broadly ovate with a slightly undulating margin, and in mature form, the leaves may show a subtle iridescence under certain lighting conditions. It grows slowly but steadily in consistent indoor environments.
Native to: Vietnam, where it is found in shaded, humid understory habitats.
Water: Keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 1/3 of the pot to dry slightly between waterings. Use a free-draining mix with high organic content to prevent root rot.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, especially during the juvenile red phase.
Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally above 70%. This makes it perfect for growing in a closed terrarium or cabinet environment.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18–26°C. Protect from temperatures below 15°C and cold draughts.
