Calathea 'Silver Plate' is a cultivar of Calathea roseopicta, known for its distinctive foliage. The leaves are glossy and greenish-grey on the upper surface, often displaying a slight pink blush when young before maturing to a uniform silver shade. The undersides of the leaves are deep purple, matching the colour of the leaf stalks. This striking contrast is a characteristic feature of many Calathea species.
This plant originates from the understory of tropical rainforests in Central and South America, where it thrives in warm, humid conditions with filtered light. As a member of the Marantaceae family, it exhibits nyctinasty, meaning its leaves move in response to light changes, folding up at night and opening during the day.
Native to:
Tropical rainforests of Central and South America, particularly thriving in the understory where light is filtered.
Water:
Maintain consistently moist soil without allowing it to become waterlogged. Calatheas are sensitive to minerals in tap water, which can cause leaf yellowing. It is best to use filtered or distilled water, or allow tap water to stand overnight before use.
Light:
Provide bright, indirect light to mimic the dappled sunlight of its natural habitat. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn and fading of the silver colouring. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or a spot with filtered light.
Humidity:
Requires high humidity levels, ideally between 50% and 70%. A humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting can help maintain moisture levels. Grouping it with other plants can also create a more humid microenvironment.
Temperature:
Prefers warm temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 16°C, as well as drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can stress the plant.
