🌿 Plant Care Tips

Anthurium Getafix x Subsignatum velvet is a hybrid velvet Anthurium combining the dark, rounded foliage traits of Anthurium forgetii (often associated with the cultivar name ‘Getafix’) and the elongated, prominently veined characteristics of Anthurium subsignatum. This cross produces thick, velvety leaves with a deep green surface and contrasting pale to silvery venation. Emerging leaves typically unfurl in shades of bronze to reddish tones before hardening off to a rich green.

This is a terrestrial to hemi-epiphytic aroid with a compact, upright growth habit and short internodes, forming a tight rosette rather than climbing. Leaf blades are broadly cordate to slightly elongated with a soft, matte texture and gently quilted surface. Under stable indoor conditions in the UK, it maintains steady growth and produces progressively larger foliage as the root system matures.

Native to:
This is a cultivated hybrid. Its parent species originate from north-western South America. Anthurium forgetii is native to Colombia, where it grows terrestrially in premontane and montane forests, often notable for its rounded sinus and smooth leaf margins. Anthurium subsignatum is native to Ecuador and parts of Colombia, occurring in humid forest understories, characterised by elongated velvety leaves and pronounced pale venation. Both species grow in consistently humid, shaded environments with free-draining organic substrates.

Water:
Keep the compost consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow approximately the top 1/3 of the substrate to dry before watering again. Use a well-draining aroid mix containing bark, perlite and organic matter to maintain oxygen around the roots. Reduce frequency slightly in cooler months, ensuring excess water drains freely from the pot.

Light:
Provide bright filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially midday sun, as this can scorch the velvety leaf surface and cause fading or crisping. A position near an east-facing window or set back from a south- or west-facing window with sheer filtering works well. Too little light may result in slower growth and less pronounced venation.

Humidity:
Prefers 65–80% humidity for optimal leaf development. It will tolerate around 60% but may produce smaller leaves or develop minor edge crisping if humidity is consistently low. Using a humidifier is beneficial. As a medium-sized velvet Anthurium, it is better suited to open room conditions with added humidity rather than enclosed terrariums once mature.

Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C, as this can stress the plant and slow root activity. Stable warmth combined with good airflow makes it perfect for growing indoors in the UK.
