🌿 Plant Care Tips

Gynura aurantiaca ‘Purple Passion’ is a trailing evergreen species native to Java and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is characterised by dark green, ovate leaves densely covered in fine purple hairs, giving the foliage a velvety texture and a vivid purple sheen. The plant typically grows upright when young, later developing a sprawling or cascading habit, making it suitable for hanging baskets or elevated containers. It produces small, orange-yellow composite flowers with a strong odour, which often appear as the plant nears the end of its life cycle.

This species is relatively short-lived, with a typical lifespan of 3–5 years. However, it is easily propagated from stem cuttings, allowing for continuous cultivation. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and helps maintain a compact form.

Native to:
Tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly Java, Indonesia.

Water:
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess moisture drains away to prevent root rot. Reduce watering frequency during the winter months.

Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may cause the purple colouration to fade and promote leggy growth.

Humidity:
Thrives in moderate humidity levels (50–70%). Avoid misting the leaves, as the fine hairs can trap moisture and lead to rot. If necessary, increase humidity by placing the plant on a pebble tray with water or using a humidifier.

Temperature:
Maintain indoor temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
