Pleurothallis rubella is a miniature epiphytic orchid species native to the cloud forests of Bolivia. It is cherished for its compact size and charming flowers, which are golden yellow-orange with a bright red lip, often blooming successively for months. The plant's small stature and attractive blossoms make it well-suited for indoor cultivation, especially in the UK.
Native to This species originates from the cloud forests of Bolivia, where it thrives in humid, shaded environments.
Water Maintain medium to high moisture levels for Pleurothallis rubella, ensuring the growing medium remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing the substrate to dry out completely, as this can stress the plant. Regular watering is essential, particularly during active growth periods.
Light Provide low to intermediate lighting conditions, equivalent to deep shade or filtered light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can cause leaf scorch. An east-facing window with sheer curtains or placement away from direct sun in a bright room can offer suitable light levels.
Humidity High humidity is crucial for Pleurothallis rubella, with levels around 70% being ideal. Such requirements make it perfect for growing in terrariums or orchidariums, where humidity can be controlled effectively. In open indoor environments, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture levels.
Temperature This orchid prefers cool to intermediate temperatures, ideally between 10-24°C. It can tolerate slightly warmer conditions but should be protected from temperatures exceeding 27°C. Avoid placing the plant near heat sources or in areas with significant temperature fluctuations.
