Culcasia rotundifolia is a climbing plant native to the tropical rainforests of Gabon, West Africa. This species is characterized by its circular to kidney-shaped leaves, which are dark olive green with a velvety gloss on the upper surface and greenish to reddish underneath. The leaves typically measure between 2 to 6 cm in diameter, with a heart-shaped base and a short, often contorted tip. As the plant matures, it develops long internodes and adherent roots along its stems, enabling it to climb effectively.
Native to: Gabon, West Africa.
Water: Maintain consistently moist soil, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the potting mix drains well. During cooler months, reduce watering frequency to match the plant's slower growth rate.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch, while insufficient light may result in leggy growth. Placing the plant near an east or north-facing window is ideal.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, ideally between 60% and 80%. Regular misting, the use of a humidifier, or placing the pot on a tray with water and pebbles can help maintain adequate humidity levels. Given its preference for high humidity, Culcasia rotundifolia is well-suited for terrarium cultivation.
Temperature: Favors warm indoor temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Protect the plant from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations, as it is sensitive to cold. Ensure indoor temperatures do not drop below 15°C to maintain healthy growth.
