Calathea 'Velvet Glory' is a striking cultivar known for its deeply rippled, patterned leaves with a soft, velvety texture. The undersides of the leaves are a deep burgundy, which adds a rich colour contrast when the leaves move throughout the day. Like other Calatheas, this plant exhibits nyctinasty, meaning its leaves fold upwards at night and spread out again in the morning.

This variety has a clumping growth habit, producing multiple stems from the base, which helps it maintain a full, bushy appearance. Its unique combination of wavy edges and plush-textured leaves makes it a visually interesting choice of houseplant for most spaces.

Native to: Calathea 'Velvet Glory' originates from the tropical rainforests of South America. This environment provides the plant with consistently warm temperatures, high humidity, and dappled light under the canopy, conditions that should be replicated indoors for optimal growth.

Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top third of the soil has dried out, using filtered or dechlorinated water to avoid leaf damage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess water from sitting at the roots.

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause the plant to lose its vibrancy. A spot near a north- or east-facing window is ideal.

Humidity: Requires high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. If humidity drops below this, use a pebble tray, humidifier, or regular misting to maintain moisture.

Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C, as well as sudden drafts or temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant.
