Selaginella griffithii is a delicate member of the spike‑moss group, appreciated for its fine, intricate foliage and preference for humid, sheltered environments. The fronds form a low, carpeting habit with tiny scale‑like leaves arranged densely along creeping stems. These give a soft textured appearance, often in bright green or slightly blue‑tinged tones under good light.
Native to: This species is native to tropical forest floors (often near streams or damp rocky outcrops) in South‑East Asia. It thrives in moist, shaded locations under a high‑humidity canopy, where air remains still and warm.
Water: Keep the substrate continuously moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing the surface to dry out fully; the delicate stems will quickly suffer if drought occurs. Ensure good drainage and avoid keeping the plant sitting in stagnant water.
Light: Provide bright filtered light or moderate indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it may scorch the fine foliage or cause it to bleach. Very low light will slow growth and reduce the vibrancy of the leaf texture.
Humidity: This plant requires high humidity, ideally around 70 % or higher. Because of this high humidity preference, it’s especially well‑suited for a terrarium or a closed humid cabinet rather than a dry room.
Temperature: Best maintained in a stable indoor temperature of 18‑26 °C. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below about 12 °C, and protect from cold drafts, especially in winter when indoor heating can dry the air.
