What Is Labisia?
Labisia is a genus of small, terrestrial plants in the primrose family, found on the forest floors of Malaysia, Indonesia and neighbouring regions. They are grown purely for their foliage, which is often textured, quilted or metallic. Forms such as Labisia 'Turtleback' and Labisia sp. Crocodile are named for their deeply textured leaves, while Labisia sp. 'Lime Edge' is prized for its contrasting margins. Most remain compact, making them ideal for enclosed displays.
How to Care for Labisia
Labisia are true jungle-floor plants and need consistent warmth and high humidity to thrive. They are happiest in a terrarium or planted case, where humidity stays high and stable. Grow them in a fine, moisture-retentive but airy mix, keep the substrate evenly damp, and use soft or rainwater where possible.
Give Labisia bright, indirect light or gentle shade, never direct sun, which scorches the delicate foliage. Warmth is important, so keep them away from cold draughts and cold windowsills. With stable conditions they are surprisingly steady growers for such uncommon plants.
Labisia for Collectors
Labisia have become highly desirable among terrarium and rare-plant collectors, valued for their unusual textures and the fact that many forms are still scarce in cultivation. If you enjoy growing them, you will likely appreciate our other rare and unusual plants and terrarium-suited species.
