Alocasia 'Frydek', commonly known as the Green Velvet Alocasia, is a stunning species renowned for its velvety, dark green to almost black leaves accented by striking white veins. This plant, native to the Philippines, is a popular choice among indoor plant enthusiasts for its unique foliage and elegant appearance. The leaves are unusually thin, soft, and delicate for an Alocasia, yet they grow large and arrow-shaped, creating a dramatic visual impact.
With its tuberous growth pattern, Alocasia 'Frydek' bushes outwards, forming a lush, dense cluster of foliage. This growth habit, combined with its impressive leaf texture and colour, makes it a perfect candidate for a statement plant in any indoor setting.
Native to: Alocasia 'Frydek' originates from the tropical rainforests of the Philippines, where it thrives in humid, shaded environments under the forest canopy.
Water: Water your Alocasia 'Frydek' little and often, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Use a well-draining soil mix and ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves, so it's best placed near an east-facing window where it can receive plenty of indirect morning light. It can also adapt to slightly lower light conditions but will thrive best with bright, diffused light.
Humidity: Alocasia 'Frydek' will grow well outside of a terrarium or cabinet but thrives with higher humidity levels. Aim for humidity above 60%, which can be achieved by grouping plants together, using a humidifier, or placing the plant in a frequently used bathroom or kitchen. High humidity supports its delicate foliage and overall health.
Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18°C to 26°C for optimal growth. Protect the plant from temperatures below 15°C, as it is sensitive to cold. Consistent warmth and humidity will help mimic its natural tropical habitat, ensuring the plant remains healthy and vibrant.
