Xerosicyos Care Guide

Xerosicyos danguyi, commonly known as the Nickel Plant, is a unique slow-growing vine native to Madagascar. Its name is pronounced zeer-oh-SY-koss DAN-gwee. In its natural habitat, it grows in dry, rocky environments. This plant is often grouped with Hoyas and Dischidias due to its vining habit and similar care requirements, but it is noticeably more tolerant and forgiving than many tropical houseplants.

Lighting

Light is one of the most important factors in keeping Xerosicyos compact and healthy. It thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun, particularly in the morning or late afternoon. Insufficient light will cause the plant to become etiolated, with long stretches of bare stem between leaves. Placing it close to a bright window will encourage tight, even growth and maintain its distinctive leaf shape.

Watering

Watering should be approached with restraint, as Xerosicyos stores moisture in its leaves and stems. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce watering significantly during the colder months. Overwatering is the most common issue with this plant and can quickly lead to root rot. When in doubt, it is always better to underwater than overwater.

Feeding

During the growing season in spring and summer, Xerosicyos benefits from occasional feeding. A diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser applied once a month is more than sufficient. Feeding is not necessary in autumn and winter, when growth naturally slows.

Repotting

When it comes to repotting, our Simply Cacti and Succulent Mix is ideal, as it provides the sharp drainage this plant needs. Xerosicyos does not mind being slightly root-bound and prefers a snug pot, so frequent repotting is unnecessary. Only repot when roots are clearly filling the container, and always choose a pot with drainage holes.

Xerosicyos danguyi has a naturally vining and trailing growth habit, making it well-suited to hanging planters or styling along shelves and ledges. It can be lightly pruned to control length or encourage fuller growth. Its adaptability and structural form make it an excellent choice for modern interiors.

Humidity

Unlike many houseplants, Xerosicyos thrives in low humidity. It is a hardy, resilient plant that adapts well to typical home environments, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced plant collectors alike.
