Monstera alcirana is a recently described species native to wet tropical forests of central Panama, specifically the provinces of Coclé, Panamá, Colón and Veraguas between 350–1000 m elevation. It’s characterised by small, round to slightly oval thick leaves with a deep green, almost black sheen. Juvenile foliage typically climbs with tight internodes along host trees, producing a compact, delicate vine. It occasionally flowers and bears orange fruit.

This species thrives under conditions similar to its native habitat: consistently moist, well-aerated soil and high humidity, yet it’s more tolerant of drier air than extreme fenestrated types. It remains small and manageable, making it an excellent candidate for terrarium culture or a moss-pole-supported pot.

Native to:
Central Panama (Coclé, Panamá, Colón, Veraguas) in wet tropical forests at mid elevations. Leaves are small, thick, glossy, and nearly black; juvenile plants produce compact internode spacing while climbing 

Water:
Use a rich, well-draining mix . Keep the soil evenly moist and avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter to match slower growth cycles.

Light:
Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun to protect the foliage. A spot near an east- or north-facing window or under diffuse artificial lighting suits its needs.

Humidity:
Prefers moderate to high humidity (60–80%). Regular ambient room levels are acceptable, but grouping or using a humidifier supports optimal health. Should not be misted heavily, as damp leaves can encourage fungal issues.

Temperature:
Thrives between 18–26 °C indoors. Avoid dips below around 15 °C and protect from cold drafts or hot radiators.
