Dracaena surculosa ‘Milky Way’ is a variegated form of Dracaena surculosa with a striking white splash down the centre of its leaves. Its foliage features a bold, central white streak, unlike the more common spotted varieties, and stems branch to produce a somewhat bushy habit. This cultivar retains many of the care traits of the species, but its variegation tends to demand slightly brighter light to maintain the contrast.
Native to:
Dracaena surculosa is native to tropical West and Central Africa, from Guinea across to the Congo region. In its wild habitat it grows under forest canopies, so it is adapted to dappled light. New leaves emerge tightly rolled and unfold into elliptic, slightly lanceolate shapes. In the ‘Milky Way’ form, the white central splash is prominent and may fade if light is too low.
Water:
Water thoroughly, allowing excess to drain out, but avoid letting the plant sit in water. Let the top soil dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Light:
Provide bright filtered light or bright shade, avoiding direct sun which can scorch the foliage. The stronger the light (within safe limits), the better the variegation definition will remain. In lower light, the white markings may fade or become less distinct.
Humidity:
Moderate to high humidity is preferred.
Temperature:
Maintain indoor temperatures between about 18 °C and 24 °C. Avoid exposing it to below ~15 °C. Keep it away from cold drafts or direct heat sources.
