Portulaca molokiniensis, also known as the petal leaf succulent or ‘Ihi, is a unique succulent native to the arid, coastal regions of Hawaii. Recognised for its upright, corky stems and rounded, fleshy green leaves arranged in neat rows, this species forms compact, shrub-like clumps and can reach a height of up to 45 cm. The plant produces small, cup-shaped yellow flowers on tall stalks, adding a delicate touch to its robust appearance. Given its adaptability to dry conditions, it’s well-suited to bright indoor settings or warm climates.
Portulaca molokiniensis is indigenous to the volcanic islets of Molokini and Kahoʻolawe in Hawaii, where it grows on sandy and rocky coastal slopes exposed to intense sunlight. This background makes it highly tolerant of sun and drought, conditions that are easily replicated indoors with sufficient light.
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This plant is highly drought-resistant and prone to root rot if overwatered. In winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to avoid any risk of standing water.
Full sun is essential for this succulent to thrive. Place it in a location with at least six hours of direct sunlight, such as a south-facing window. If natural light is limited, consider using a grow light to supplement its needs. Lack of light may cause the plant to become leggy or lose its vibrant green colour.
Portulaca molokiniensis is adapted to low humidity, as it naturally occurs in dry, coastal environments. Standard indoor humidity levels are sufficient, and additional humidity is generally unnecessary. This low moisture requirement makes it ideal for open, airy spaces.
Preferring warmth, this succulent does best in temperatures between 15-28°C (59-82°F). It is not frost-tolerant, so if temperatures fall below 4°C (39°F), move it indoors or protect it from the cold. For consistent growth, avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
