Begonia montis-elephantis is a rare, moisture-loving Begonia native to the limestone cliffs and waterfall regions of Cameroon. With its bright green, trailing foliage and small yellow flowers, this plant is particularly suited to terrarium cultivation, where its humidity and temperature needs can be consistently met. Its compact size and preference for stable moisture levels make it ideal for small, enclosed environments, away from air drafts.
Native to
Originating in the tropical regions of Cameroon, Begonia montis-elephantis grows naturally on damp, mossy rocks and shaded cliffs, which influence its indoor requirements for high humidity and indirect light.
Water
This plant requires consistent moisture but should never sit in soggy soil. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, using a well-draining mix with peat moss, perlite, and akadama to ensure root health.
Light
Begonia montis-elephantis prefers low to medium indirect light. Position it near a north or east-facing window, but avoid direct sunlight, which can damage its leaves.
Humidity
Maintaining humidity levels around 70-80% is ideal for this plant, making it a good choice for a terrarium. Outside of a terrarium, a humidifier or pebble tray can help maintain the necessary ambient moisture.
Temperature
This plant thrives in temperatures between 16-24°C. It is sensitive to colder conditions, and temperatures below 13°C can lead to stunted growth and leaf drop. Moderate airflow is beneficial to prevent mildew and keep the plant healthy.
