🌿 Plant Care Tips

The Platycerium bifurcatum, commonly known as the Staghorn Fern, is a unique and eye-catching fern that is highly adored for its distinctive fronds and shield-like basal leaves. Native to Australia and New Caledonia, this epiphytic plant can be grown mounted on a slab of bark or cork, mimicking its natural growing conditions. The fern’s unusual appearance, with its long, dangling fronds resembling stag antlers, makes it a striking addition to any indoor plant collection.

This fern can attain quite a large size in optimal conditions, making it a statement piece in homes or terrariums. Despite its exotic look, the Staghorn Fern is relatively easy to grow, provided its specific needs for moisture, light, and humidity are met.

Native to: Platycerium bifurcatum is indigenous to the subtropical and tropical rainforests of Australia and New Caledonia, where it thrives as an epiphyte on trees.

Water: The Staghorn Fern prefers to be kept moist but not saturated. Water the plant by soaking the base, allowing it to absorb water thoroughly before letting it drain completely. In a mounted setup, this usually means soaking the entire mount in water for a short period. Ensure the plant dries out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for the Staghorn Fern. It thrives in filtered sunlight, similar to the dappled light conditions of its natural habitat. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds, and very low light, which can impede its growth.

Humidity: This fern thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 70% and 90%. It is well-suited for a terrarium environment, where humidity can be more easily maintained. In regular indoor settings, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can help to achieve the necessary moisture levels.

Temperature: The optimal temperature range for the Staghorn Fern is between 18°C and 24°C. It does not tolerate cold well and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C. Ensuring a stable, warm environment will help the plant to thrive and grow to its full potential.
