Hibiscus syriacus, better known as Rose of Sharon, is one of the most rewarding hardy flowering shrubs you can grow in a British garden. Where tropical hibiscus needs a heated greenhouse, this tough, deciduous cousin shrugs off frost and bursts into bloom just as much of the border is starting to fade. From late summer into early autumn it covers itself in large, exotic, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, blue, lilac and deep red, many with a striking contrasting eye at the centre.

Why gardeners love it

  • Genuinely hardy across the UK, tolerating temperatures well below freezing
  • Flowers in August and September, filling the late-season gap
  • Upright, bushy habit that can be grown as a shrub or a small hibiscus tree
  • Happy in borders, gravel gardens or a large container on a sunny patio

This is a slow but steady grower, eventually forming a shapely shrub of around 2-3m tall and 1.5-2m across. Its measured pace and neat form make it one of the easiest large-flowered shrubs to place, whether as a standout specimen, part of a mixed border, or a flowering screen.

To get the best from your hardy hibiscus, choose a warm, sheltered spot in full sun, ideally south or west-facing. It is not fussy about soil and will grow happily on chalk, clay, loam or sand, provided the ground is moist but well-drained. Plant it where it can bask through the day, as plenty of sun is the key to a long, generous flowering display. Prune lightly in early spring, before growth restarts, to keep an open framework and encourage fresh flowering wood. Be patient in spring too, as this hibiscus shrub is one of the last to leaf up, often staying bare until well into May before springing back to life.

Every Rose of Sharon we send out is a strong, well-rooted plant, carefully grown and hand-selected so it settles in quickly and rewards you for years to come.

  • Yes. Unlike the tender tropical hibiscus, Rose of Sharon is a fully hardy deciduous shrub that withstands UK winters down to around -15C to -20C. It drops its leaves in autumn and reshoots in late spring, so don't worry if it looks bare and dormant well into May.

  • Give it a sheltered spot in full sun for the best flowering. It will tolerate light, dappled shade, but bloom production drops noticeably and growth is leggier the less direct sun it gets. A warm south or west-facing position is ideal.

  • It is a slow-growing shrub that eventually reaches roughly 2-3m tall and 1.5-2m wide over many years. Its upright, bushy habit makes it easy to keep in scale, and it can be trained as a small multi-stemmed tree or kept compact with pruning.

  • Yes, it grows well in a large container of at least 40-50cm using a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Keep it watered through summer when it is flowering, feed in the growing season, and top-dress or pot on every couple of years.

  • Prune in early to mid spring before growth resumes, as it flowers on the current season's wood. Lightly shorten the previous year's shoots and remove any dead, weak or crossing stems to keep an open, well-shaped framework and encourage strong flowering.
