Cussonia spicata, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree, is a small to medium-sized tree that can be grown indoors for its striking architectural form and unique foliage. Its leaves are deeply lobed and arranged in a large, umbrella-like rosette, giving the plant a distinctive, sculptural appearance. These leaves are a greyish-green and can grow up to 30 cm long, providing an unusual aesthetic to any indoor space. While it is technically a tree, Cussonia spicata can be kept much smaller in containers, making it an interesting specimen for indoor environments.
Cussonia spicata is a member of the Araliaceae family, and though it can grow quite large in its native environment, it remains compact when grown indoors. Its thick, fleshy trunk stores water, allowing the plant to tolerate occasional drought. With its unusual shape and growth pattern, this plant adds a dramatic presence to an indoor collection and is relatively low-maintenance compared to other indoor trees.
Native to
Cussonia spicata is native to southern Africa, particularly in regions like South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique. It grows naturally in dry, rocky areas and open woodlands. In the wild, it can reach heights of up to 10 metres, but when grown indoors, it is typically kept to a manageable size of 1-2 metres.
Water
Cussonia spicata prefers well-drained soil and should be watered thoroughly, but only when the top layer of soil has dried out. This plant is drought-tolerant thanks to its water-storing trunk, so it can withstand occasional lapses in watering. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot, especially when the plant is not actively growing.
Light
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning or late afternoon sun, which helps to maintain its compact growth. If placed in lower light conditions, Cussonia spicata may become leggy as it stretches toward the light, so it's best to keep it in a well-lit area.
Humidity
Cussonia spicata does not have high humidity requirements and can adapt to typical indoor conditions. A humidity level between 40-60% is adequate, and it does not need additional misting or a humidifier to thrive. Its tolerance of drier air makes it a good choice for less humid environments.
Temperature
This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 26°C. It should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, which can cause damage or stunt growth. Cussonia spicata is well-suited to average indoor conditions and can handle temperature fluctuations as long as it is kept away from extremes.
